AETNA

"We want you to know."

The CEO of Aetna is another example of a beneficial policy-making. After having a terrible ski accident in 2004, Mark Bertolini spent roughly a year out of the office as he fought to recover. In addition to traditional physical therapy exercises, he tried homeopathic techniques, yoga, and meditation, as well as some nutritional changes. As a result, he made a much faster and fuller recovery than doctors anticipated. When he returned to work, he brought in yoga and meditation for everyone. While only 28 percent of people actually took any of the classes, it was so effective in reducing stress and increasing wellness among workers it decreased Aetna’s paid healthcare costs by more than $9 million the following year.
